Cameron Lake

August 7, 2014 - Cameron Lake

It was 14ºC, calm and over cast this morning. The sun came out in mid- morning and then the temperature rose to 26ºC in the afternoon. Lorraine was up and on her walk at 7:30am which took her twice around the interpretive walking path on the hill to east and once around the campground.

The benches along the interpretive path allow one to sit quietly and meditate while looking over the fields at the mountains in the distance.

We did our morning routine, packed a picnic lunch and drove in to Waterton Lakes National Park.

We decided todays tour would be the scenic Akamina Parkway (Cameron Lake Road), 15.2 km or a half hour trip on switch backs to Cameron Lake at the south end of the National Park and US border.

Along the way we stopped at the Crandell Lake trail head and took a photo of the trail on the map.

We continued on along Cameron River with it's gorges, pine trees, and avalanche area at an Elevation of 1600m. Finally reaching the Cameron Lake parking area.

In the full parking lot, we saw many tourists cars and motorhomes from distant places, Nova Scotia, US states, and one as far away as Argentina. Everyone was there to enjoy the warm day and the environment in some sort of activity.

We walk the east shore path until we reach a prominent sign warning us there were bears in the area. There were boats to rent but many people brought their own.

We had our lunch in the truck before returning. Many hiker, horse-back riders and bikers were making their way on Lineham Trail, and Rowe Creek Trail.

On our return we stopped at a National Historical site of Discovery Oil Well, the first producing oil well in Western Canada, discovered in 1902. In the same area was a ghost town site called Oil City, that was surveyed for 450 – 50ft lots in 1904. When the boom went bust, the settlement dwindled. All that remains is a piece of a foundation that was to be for a hotel.

We stopped in Waterton Town and tried to get on the Bayshore Inn internet with no luck. On our return to the campsite I took the lap top over to the office and was able to get on the internet with no problem. I was able to read all my latest emails and face book messages.

So until next time, remember to “Discover It and Live It”.
